1. FORWARD

In 1857, Albany, Ga. was 21 years old and had grown large enough to require more organization in all its affairs. It had recently formed a county of its own out of the northern part of Baker County and felt a civic consciousness towards the surronding territory as well as towards itself. There was a feeling of need to assemble its manpower towards the preservation of law and order as well as for civic and social purposes. Nearly every town of any consequence had an organized miltia unit. The Constitution of the State and the Nation made every man between the ages of 18 and 45 subject to call for the use of local, State and National Defense. Every precinct in every county throughout the nation was a "militia district" and every male citizen was supposedly registered and required to meet periodic "musters" to show his equipment in firearms and sometimes his ability to use them in target practice and military drill. Thus on October 13, 1857, the now Albany Guards was organized as an independent company unit of the Georgia Volunteer Militia.
