12-POUNDER MOUNTAIN HOWITZER
The 12-pound mountain howitzer probably saw more use in the Mexican War on the Western prairie than it did during the Civil War. But its unique features are at least worthy of mention. Although a smoothbore with the same bore diameter as the Napoleon and capable of firing the same projectiles, it was small enough to be completely broken down and transported on pack animals. For field use it did not employ a limber, but was moved by a lone animal attached to the trail by two poles.
